Der 550-Einwohner-Touristenort grenzt an mehreren Seiten an den Nationalpark Harz. Der 25 000 Hektar große Park wiederum unterliegt derzeit dem grundlegendsten Wandel seiner Vegetation seit Jahrzehnten. Seit 2018 lassen Stürme, Dürre und Käfer massiv Fichten absterben. 80 Prozent der Bestände macht die Baumart hier oben aus. Luftbilder zeigen auch flächenhaft braune Wipfel.

Der Nationalpark hält sich in der Kernzone dabei weitgehend aus der Entwicklung heraus. Die Idee: Die absterbenden Bäume sollen durch natürliche Verjüngung ersetzt werden. Am Ende soll ein artenreicher, naturnaher Wald entstehen, der weniger anfällig für Klimaschäden ist.

In Schierke habe man das lange akzeptiert, sagt Ortsbürgermeisterin Hopstock. Jetzt aber sinke die Akzeptanz in der Bevölkerung. Das Totholz im Park sei knochentrocken, Löschwasser fehle. Viele Schierker befürchteten, dass ein großer Waldbrand auch ihren Ort erreichen könnte. „Es gibt nur eine Straße nach Schierke“, sagt Hopstock. „Das ist eine Riesengefahr. Für uns wäre wichtig, dass Totholz endlich beräumt und Schutzschneisen geschlagen werden.“

In Schierke, this has long been accepted, says local mayor Hopstock. Now, however, acceptance among the population is falling. The dead wood in the park is bone dry, there is no water for fire fighting. Many Schierker feared that a large forest fire could also reach their town. „There is only one road to Schierke“, says Hopstock. „This is a huge danger. It would be important for us to clear the dead wood and cut the firebreaks.“
